The Hollywood Reporter announced the adaption and Johnson’s role earlier today. The movie will reunite The Rock with New Line and producer Beau Flynn, the same team behind Johnson’s current hit, San Andreas. Given how successful San Andreas has been, earning $400 million worldwide, New Line are eager to work with Johnson again, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie will adapt the 1986 Midway arcade game, Rampage, a game about monsters destroying a city. Rampage allowed you to choose between a Gorilla, Lizard or Wolf, and wreak havoc on the city; climbing buildings King Kong style, reducing them to rubble, eating people and fly-swatting helicopters. Given that The Rock is starring in the movie, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess he will be attempting to stop a monster(s) from destroying a city, as opposed to being the destroyer.
Rampage was originally an arcade game released in 1986 but was ported to every home console, including the Atari 2600, NES and Sega Master System. 10 years later a sequel, Rampage: World Tour, was released on PS1, N64, Sega Saturn and other systems. The PS1 version is where I personally fell in love with the franchise. Four more sequels came throughout the years, with the final installment landing on the Wii in 2006.
Johnson is set to appear in a remake of Big Trouble in Little China, as well as Journey 3: From Earth to the Moon, Central Intelligence, Moana, Furious 8, and Shazam!, as well as Rampage. Seeing as he is the biggest actor on the planet right now, in stature and demand, it’s doubtful we’ll see The Rock back in a WWE ring anytime soon.
