You also won’t find almost any of these items until very late in a playthrough, and all Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are guarded by enemies that deal massive damage and have huge health pools. That doesn’t even consider the bosses or other trials you need to overcome to acquire them.
Where to Find the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in Elden Ring
The majority of Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones you’ll find in Elden Ring are in the optional Haligtree area, home to Malenia, Blade of Miquella at its base.
Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones
You will need to make your way to the city of Elphael at the base of the Haligtree to pick up the two Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones here. Both stones are close by the Prayer Room Site of Grace. If you go past the Putrid Avatar mini-boss, you’ve gone too far.
Elphael Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone 1
Head into the city from the Prayer Room Site of Grace until you can’t go any farther. Down to your right will be a garden gazebo with two Cleanrot Knights and standard soldiers wandering about.
Take the strut down to the gazebo platform. Go across it to the strut on the other side, and then go up. There will be a dark alcove in the wall with a chest inside.
The Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is in the chest.
Elphael Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone 2
Remember that Putrid Avatar on the path below the Prayer Room Site of Grace? It guards the second Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
Head down to the path, and rather than going to the doorway behind the Avatar, turn right and go to the end of the path on the same side of the area as the Prayer Room.
The stone is on a corpse near the path’s end.
Crumbling Farum Azula Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone
After the Godskin Duo fight, you’ll drop onto the platform to the left of the wandering Crucible Knight. In the distance will be a large, lightning-throwing dragon.
Behind him is a ruined gazebo, which holds the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
You don’t have to kill the dragon to pick up the stone.
Mountaintops of the Giants Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone
Perhaps the easiest Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone to find, you will still need the Latenna Summon Spirit, who you’ll acquire getting the Haligtree Secret Medallion Left. With her spirit in hand, go to the northwesternmost portion of the Mountaintops of the Giants, to the Apostate Derelic ruins.
There, you’ll see a large corpse of a woman who looks oddly like Latenna. In front of her is a summon sign on the ground that, when stood upon, says, “Summon Latenna.”
Doing so will bring her spirit forth, and she will talk briefly to the corpse, then give you the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
Mohgwyn Palace Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone
The one Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in Mohgwyn Palace is located just before the elevator leading to his boss room. From the Palace Approach Ledge Road Site of Grace, through the blood swamp, into the dark cave and out until you see a dozen or so enemies kneeling before a great statue. There is a treasure chest on the dias.
The Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is inside the chest. Unless you kill all the enemies, the best way to gather the stone is to spend all your runes, run up and open the chest, die, then grab it from the still open chest when you respawn.
